ANPR is the latest crime fighting
tool available to the police and is the process by which
moving cars have their number plates read via video
camera and matched against computer databases.
Once the number plate has been read and matched against
a database, it will generate an alert, and in such a case
the car may be stopped by police officers for further
investigation or for intelligence gathering purposes.
ANPR is estimated to be around ten times more effective
than normal traffic policing methods, primarily because
it identifies suspect vehicles that may not normally
attract police attention.
